Physical Activity and Nutrition for Diabetes in Alberta (PANDA) is a research program underway at the University of Alberta. Their goal is to develop a guide for healthy eating featuring Alberta-grown meats, crops and oilseeds. The recipes will focus on locally grown commodities. The guide includes menu plans, recipes and grocery lists, as well as healthy eating tips and nutrition information to assist consumers in adopting eating patterns that promote health and prevent chronic disease.

Alberta Barley has offered $1,000 to the project. In return, PANDA will add barley-based recipes to the guide, as well as Alberta Barley’s health claim that eating barley fibre will help to reduce cholesterol.
