- Reports of shortages and lack of availability of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for farmers and their employees as seeding 2020 starts, is a concern. Team Alberta is working with government and other stakeholders on distribution and priority for OHS and those most in need. Late Friday afternoon (April 24) the government released a process to allow agriculture – as an essential service – to order PPE equipment.
- Despite concerns from industry and funders – Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) has halted most research activities until further notice. Apart from long-term rotation maintenance, control of pests near private land and several other critical functions, research activities will not continue. This includes all field research that would need to be seeded imminently.
- Agriculture and Forestry Minister Devin Dreeshen stresses that changes at AFSC will lead to improved service and suggests Alberta is designing a set aside program for the beef industry.
