Crop report August 6, 2019

Peace region

  • Overall crop rating: approximately 70% of both wheat and barley crops are rated good to excellent
  • Moisture rating: the majority of the region is rated good or excellent, with some areas that are still excessively wet
  • Crop stage: late flowering stage
  • Disease and insect pressures: some grasshopper damage on canola has been reported
  • Other major challenges: wet weather is having an effect on hay cutting

Northern region

  • Overall crop rating: 80% of barley crops and 90% of wheat crops are rated good to excellent on the east side of the region, and only around 50% of barley crops and 55% of wheat crops are rated good to excellent on the west side of the region
  • Moisture rating: the east side of the region is generally rated good to excellent, while the west side is either rated good to excellent, or experiencing excessive moisture
  • Crop stage: flowering to late flowering stage
  • Disease and insect pressures: higher moisture levels have increased disease pressure

Central region

  • Overall crop rating: 85% of barley fields and 80% of wheat fields are rated good to excellent
  • Moisture rating: mainly good to excellent
  • Crop stage: mid to late flowering stage
  • Other major challenges: hail storms and excessive wind damaging crops

Southern region

  • Overall crop rating: 55% of both wheat and barley crops are rated good to excellent
  • Moisture rating: about 40% good to excellent
  • Crop stage: late milk stage
  • Other major challenges: the lack of moisture is negatively affecting crop yield
