Funding
Research Projects - Two Track Application Process
Through its research program, the Alberta Barley Commission fosters development of new and improved technologies by initiating and coordinating research on barley in the areas of production, processing, marketing, and product development.
The Commission accepts research applications in two ways -- through the Agricultural Funding Consortium and by submission directly to the Commission itself.
Agriculture Funding Consortium
The Alberta Barley Commission is one of 16 members that make up the Agriculture Funding Consortium www.fundingconsortium.ca.
Other members include:
The Consortium was formed in 2000 to evaluate and fund agricultural research and development in Alberta. Each year it seeks applications for leading-edge, innovative and industry-relevant projects that will support the further development of the agricultural industry in Alberta.
One of the benefits of the Consortium is that it has a “one-window application approach” -- applicants need only submit a single funding application to reach a wide range of potential funders.
Applicants should be aware of the priorities and investment criteria of the six Agriculture Funding Consortium members and the 10 associate members when submitting letters of intent.
The Consortium’s fall primary call for applications is open for both research and development. Research applications are open to basic and applied research initiatives. They require a letter of intent (LOI), which must be submitted by September 2, 2008. Successful applicants are asked to submit a full proposal by November 1, 2008.
All proposals are reviewed by scientific and expert committees. Each funding organization considers the reviews and determines its interest in supporting individual proposals. The funding members then meet and collectively determine funding levels and how they will collaborate on projects.
Applications and instructions are available at www.fundingconsortium.ca with further details and a listing of R&D priorities available online at www.alidf.ca and www.aari.ab.ca.
Submission of research proposals directly to the Commission
Researchers submitting proposals that do not seek funding from other Agricutural Funding Consortium members may consider submitting directly to the Commission. However, those proposals that seek funds from Consortium members are encouraged to submit to the Agricultural Funding Consortium for approval.
The Commission will continue to accept proposals for consideration directly. Pre-proposal forms, should briefly outline the project, its value to the barley industry in Alberta, and include a summary budget. These pre-proposals will be reviewed and researchers will be requested, by invitation only, to submit full project proposals for further consideration. An original and two copies of the pre-proposal application should be submitted to the Alberta Barley Commission before Friday, October 24, 2008.
Prior to submitting a research proposal, please consult the Commission’s Guidance for New Project Proposals. This list is meant to complement the important areas that are already being addressed by the Commission, such as NIRS and barley breeding. These subjects are intended only as a guide for researchers submitting new proposals, whether through the Agricultural Funding Consortium or directly to the Commission. Researchers are invited to submit proposals on other topics as well. Full consideration is given to all submissions.
The research priorities determined by the Barley Development Council are also taken into consideration when evaluating the research proposals and are available upon request.
