Policy

One of the ways we serve the interests of Alberta’s barley producers is by representing them to government and regulatory organizations. New policies, legislation and regulations in any number of areas can greatly affect the operations and viability of barley producers.

Our task is to offer timely, factual and knowledgeable insight into everything from local area wetland policies through to representing our industry at World Trade Organization negotiations. The goal is to ensure barley producers are treated fairly and equitably, and that they have access to existing and future markets, opportunities and information.

The Commission’s board members and key staff members, primarily the CEO and the Policy & Research & Policy coordinator, conduct policy activities by: tracking, monitoring and responding to trends and issues; writing letters, briefs and position papers; and attending meetings, hearings and presentations across Alberta, Canada and countries around the world.

The Commission also has representatives on numerous local, provincial, national and international industry councils, steering committees and associations. Furthermore, it works closely with a number of industry partners in Canada to speak with a concise and unified voice on issues and concerns that affect businesses, organization, individual and families throughout the agricultural sector.
