The variable rate project will evaluate the EM38 and the VERIS soil-mapping tools, management zone delineation techniques and agronomy options. The tools both map soil variability by measuring the electrical conductivity (EC) of soil. The project will provide scientific data regarding precision agriculture tools, and simple protocols for producers considering adoption of this technology.
Soil EC maps allow farmers to view variations in soil properties throughout different areas of their fields—including texture, salinity and depth—that have a direct impact on yield. As a result, soil-mapping technologies can help farmers to maximize yield based on their specific soil conditions in order to maximize profitability.
