Characterizing feed barley

The project aims to develop a competitive crop and livestock industry by highlighting the benefits that can be provided by unique varieties of barley to cattle and swine—not just for animal growth, but also for their health. The project could identify characteristics that can be used as a screening tool to identify barley lines earlier in the breeding process for the livestock feeding industries and enhance feeding value of barley in swine and cattle diets. Enhancing barley’s value as feed for swine and cattle could make it a more attractive feed option, fuelling demand and increasing barley’s profitability for farmers.
