Members
To be an eligible producer, or member, of the Alberta Barley Commission, the Alberta Barley Plan Regulations require you to have paid a service charge check-off dollars to the Commission in one or more of the last three crop years.
An estimated 17,000 Alberta farmers in six provincial regions are currently members of the Commission.
Our members are represented by elected directors and delegates.
Check-off dollars
Under the Alberta Barley Plan Regulations, Alberta barley producers must pay 50 cents to the Alberta Barley Commission for every tonne of barley they sell. Typically, customers purchasing Alberta-grown barley from producers deduct check-off dollars from their payment to producers and remit the funds to the Commission.
This fee is the Commission’s sole source of ongoing revenue. Check-off dollars fund research and marketing activities to improve the value of barley, both for the growers and their customers.
It is illegal in Alberta to withhold these funds. Producers, however, may request a refund of their check-off dollars.

Directors & Delegates
Each year, a number of directors and delegates are elected from their respective regions across the province to represent fellow barley growers. Directors and delegates help guide the activities of the Alberta Barley Commission.
In 2007, three director positions were available as were several delegate positions.
Trevor Petersen was elected as a new director for Region 3; he replaced Jesper Nielsen, who stepped down as a director, but was elected as a delegate for that region. John Wozniak Jr. was re-elected as director for Region 4, and Leo Meyer was re-elected as director-at-large for Region 6.
Eligible producers in Region 1 elected Andrew Otto as their new delegate. Other new delegates are Wade Christie (Region 2) and Harold Haugen (Region 3).
If you’re an eligible barley producer interested in becoming a delegate or director, contact us. These roles are vital to the organization’s success and its ability to understand and respond to the needs of Alberta’s 17,000 barley producers.
Director responsibilities include attending the Commission’s Board meetings, its annual general meeting, various committee meetings, and an annual regional meeting. As well, directors represent the Commission on various third-party councils and committees as well as at numerous community and industry events. Eligible producers elect Directors to represent them at the regional level, and elect directors-at -large to represent them at the provincial level.
Delegate responsibilities include attending the Commission’s annual general meeting every December as well as an annual regional meeting every fall. Delegates may also be invited to represent the Commission at community and trade events. Eligible producers elect the delegates.
