Alberta Barley Election News

Posted on Aug 6 By: Sydney Duhaime

Alberta Barley holds its elections every fall during regional meetings. Any barley farmer is eligible to become a delegate or a director in 2015 so long as they have paid a service charge in 2013, 2014 or 2015 (according to Section 17 of the Alberta Barley Plan Regulation).

Alberta Barley is governed by a nine-person board of directors: six directors represent individual regions and three directors-at-large serve the province as a whole. Following the annual general meeting each year, the board of directors elects the executive team, which is made up of the chair and the vice-chair.

This year there are two regional director positions (regions five and six), and one director-at-large position open for election. The current directors in regions five and six are eligible to serve a second term if re-elected. Nominations for these positions must be received at the Alberta Barley office by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, October 30, 2015.

Alberta Barley directors work in a team with their regional delegates. All together there are 32 delegate positions to serve the six regions. This year there are 14 delegate positions open for election. Delegates are nominated from the floor during their respective regional meetings.

If more than one person is nominated for a vacant position an election will be held at regional meetings. Votes for regional delegates and directors will be tabulated and announced at the regional meetings. Voted for the director-at-large position will be tabulated and announced at the December 2015 annual general meeting.
