Election called for director-at-large position

(Calgary, AB) Nov. 2, 2012 – Alberta Barley (ABC) has announced two new board members after the close of its director and director-at-large nominations period on Wed., Oct. 31, 2012.

Bryan Adam of Stony Plain and Gerald Finster of Valleyview were acclaimed as directors for regions five and six respectively. Finster replaces outgoing director Ron Heck (2006–12), while Adam takes over for Albert Wagner (2005–12).

For ABC rookie Finster, it’s a particularly exciting time to join the Commission.

Similarly, Adam is keen to step up to the board after serving as a delegate for the last 10 years.

“It’s going to be a big learning curve for me,” said Adam. “I want to carry on what Albert Wagner did for the last seven years and provide solid representation for region five.”

Commission Chairman Matt Sawyer is looking forward to working with the new directors.

“They are veteran producers whose operational and farming knowledge will add value to our board,” said Sawyer.

As for the director-at-large position, Richard Mueller, incumbent director-at-large from Barrhead, will run against former director-at-large Leo Meyer from Woking. Elections for director-at-large and delegate positions will be held at all six upcoming regional meetings.

“Regional meetings give farmers a chance to learn more about the Commission and its activities, while also providing insight into research, production, policy and market development priorities,” said Sawyer. “We have a lot of great information to share.”
Finster and Adam will both serve in their respective regions for the next three years.

The election results for director-at-large will be announced at the Annual General Meeting on Dec. 6, 2012.

Canada’s only barley commission, Alberta Barley is a not-for-profit organization directed, funded and controlled by the province’s barley farmers. The Commission co-ordinates and sponsors research, market development, technology transfer and policy development on behalf of its producers.
